UNP says that the party leadership recognizes only the meetings and forums that are held under the approval of the chairman of the UNP local government representatives' subcommittee Wajira Abeywardena.

However, the forums of the local government representatives are held under the patronage of the Deputy Leader Premadasa in provinces, UNP sources say.

Party Leader has reportedly instructed the UNP organizers to identify these local government representatives who work against the party instructions to not to grant them the party candidature in future elections.

The UNP leadership and General Secretary have earlier said that meetings should not be organized without approval and that party members should not attend such meetings.
