Damages due to Magazine prison riot rises to Rs.7.5 mil

The estimated amount of property damage as a result of the Magazine prison riots yesterday (January 24) has risen to close to Rs.7.5 million, Police Spokesman SP Ajith Rohana stated.

The prison record room, library and kitchen were completely destroyed during the rioting, he told Ada Derana. Around 1500 drug addicts had been remanded at the prison while they were chiefly responsible for the rioting yesterday, the Police Spokesman added.

However, on the order of the Western Province Senior DIG Ashok Wijeytileke further investigations into the incident will be conducted by the Colombo Crimes Division.
