Sri Lanka seeks operators to resume Tuticorin ferry service

Sri Lanka is seeking operators to revive the halted ferry service between Colombo and Tuticorin in India and has called for Expressions of Interest (EoI) from potential operators, an Indian media report said.

A top official of the Ceylon Shipping Corporation has said that they have placed advertisements both in India and locally calling for EOIs and the deadline for submitting response is February 20.

"Thereafter, it will be some time before we could evaluate and make the offer to successful bidder," the official has told PTI.

The new Chairman of Ceylon Shipping Corporation Kanchana Ratwatte last month has said the discussions were underway to resume the ferry service between Sri Lanka and India.

Indian company Flamingo Liners launched the 9-story MV Scotia Prince in June 2011 between the Colombo port and the Indian port of Tuticorin expecting to boost the tourist industry and attract the business community travelling frequently between the two countries for business.

However, the 1000-passenger ferry halted operations in less than six months from its launch. The ship is now detained at the Colombo Ports since November 18 due to unpaid bills amounting to over US$ 400,000 as catering charges.
