
His Excellency President Mahinda Rajapaksa handed over the keys of 25 houses this morning (11) in Senarathgama, Kandy built under the first phase of the programme launched to construct 700 housing units for war heroes under the 'Api Wenuwen Api' concept.
President participated at the ceremony as the chief guest and personally handed over 25 keys to the war heroes representing the Sri Lanka security forces.
The beneficiaries were the war heroes who were killed or become disabled while serving in the battlefront to defend the motherland. Also several war heroes currently in service were among the beneficiaries. Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa was also present at the ceremony.
The housing project is nearing completion under the able guidance and close supervision of the Defence Secretary. The Defence Ministry's Seva Vanitha Unit made the financial contribution and supervised the implementation of the project while three forces contributing the manpower.
H.E. President Mahinda Rajapaksa who arrived at the site handed over the keys of the first house to the widow and the child of Sergeant Karunawansha of the Sri Lanka Army. Thereafter President Rajapaksa ceremonially cut the ribbon and entered the house. The late sergeant Karunawansha had paid the supreme sacrifice in the patriotic war against terrorism. Later, President Rajapaksa who participated at the ceremony donated the other 24 houses to the respective beneficiaries symbolically by handing over the keys.
Beneficiaries also received sets of cutlery and crockery and various gifts to children. Mr. Lakshman Hulugalle Director General of Media Centre for National Security explained to the audience the objectives of the 'Api Wenuwen Api' fund and its implementation.
This is an excellent way to pay tribute to the war heroes for their service rendered to the country to eradicate the terrorism prevailed for 30 years.
Central Province governor Tikiri Kobbakaduwa, Minister of Mass Media Keheliya Rambukwella, Central Province Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake, Parlimentarians, Chairperson of Defence Ministry's Seva Vaqnitha Unit Mrs Ioma Rajapakse, three forces commanders and Inspector General of Police also participated to grace the occasion. .
