President Mahinda Rajapaksa has called on the nation to unite to nurture the future generation exploiting the resources of the motherland sans waiting for the arrival of ships from other countries. He made this appeal opening the Bata-atha Farmer’s Exhibition.

The President opined that the Government has promptly carried out programmes to encourage farmers to build a self-sufficient country, providing them with facilities including financial assistance for fertilizer. He was optimistic that farmers will forget this service.

The Government has launched programmes to prevent food shortage and overcome other issues that arise from it. The country is now  on the threshold of becoming self-sufficient with the national cultivation drive which was mooted with the purpose of developing agriculture. The President noted that even though some people cut trees, they do not think of planting another tree.

Thus this Exhibition provides an insight into the value of the tree.He underscored that the people should not be lethargic and claim  they do not have money for development. He recalled that the Government did not give up its battle for peace saying that they did not have funds. The President said they succeeded in achieving victory over terrorism.

The President declared open the Agricultural exhibition organized in parallel to the “National Farmers Week”. The exhibition at the Bata-atha Agricultural Technology Park will continue until Sunday the 5th. A crops museum, a fruits park and paddy cultivation models are among the many sectors related to the agricultural field which are on display. The venue was named as the Chamal Rajapaksa Agri Technology Park. The President also declared open an Agri Information Centre and an Agri product outlet. The first-day cover released to mark National Farmers Week was presented to the President.

The President emphasized that the Government has properly launched the programme to strengthen the local cultivator building a self sufficient economic framework within the country. The Government has discharged a significant service for the welfare of the farmer community. The President was optimistic that this would remain within the hearts of the farmer population.

Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa and Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena were among the many Parliamentarians present.
