Over 300,000 landmines cleared
Demining groups operating in the North and East have achieved tremendous success by removing over 300,000 landmines laid by LTTE terrorists during war time, said Military Spokesman Major General UAB Medawela.

Speaking at media conference held at the Media Centre for National Security yesterday (02 Sep), he revealed that there are still another area of 2000 square kilometers to be cleared.

He went on to say that an area of 1,800 square kilometers of the Northern, Eastern and North Central Provinces have been cleared by the de-mining groups.

The landmines are scattered all over without adhering to proper procedures stipulated by international conventions making the demining process a difficult, he added.

He further said that the Army is involved in clearing of 90 percent of land minds while other eight locally and foreign operated NGOs have contributed for the rest.
