September 03, 2010: Investigations have commenced into the incident where two suspects in remand custody in the Akkaraipattu area in Kalmunai had escaped from remand custody.

Prisons Commissioner, Major General V. R. Silva said that the incident took place yesterday.

The two prisoners had escaped while being transported to Kalmunai after having been produced before court in Akkaraipattu.

The Prisons Commissioner said that the two escapees had been arrested in connection with a number of robberies in the area adding that they had fled with their handcuffs still on.

The official said that investigations had commenced to locate the prisoners with the assistance of police.
